It feels casual - a friendly AI asking about your work - but it adapts to your answers in real time, and shallow knowledge unravels fast under its follow-ups. If you’ve done real engineering work, Zara is very passable. You just need to know how it thinks.

What Zara is

Zara is micro1’s conversational AI screener. It probes your primary stack, then drills into follow-ups based on your answers, so surface-level knowledge shows quickly. Unlike a fixed question bank, it branches: a strong answer earns a harder question, and a weak one earns a probe to see whether you actually understand or just memorised.

Expect it to start broad - “tell me about a system you built” - and narrow relentlessly. Within three questions you’ll be explaining a specific trade-off you made and why. That funnel is the whole test.

How to prepare

Have your environment ready to share code, know your main stack cold and keep answers concise. Depth on one stack beats breadth across five. Pick the language and framework you’ve shipped the most in and let every example come from there.

Rehearse out loud. Say your two best project stories to yourself the day before - not to memorise a script, but so the words come easily when you’re nervous. Zara penalises long pauses and rewards clear, structured thinking.

During the screen

Keep answers to 45-90 seconds, then pause for the follow-up. If you don’t know something, say so and explain how you’d find out - that reads far better than bluffing, which the model is specifically tuned to detect. Have a code editor open so you can share a snippet instantly if asked; fumbling for your environment burns time and confidence.
